Assessment Criteria

 

Children

 

Beginner with Parent

BP classes are designed for children from the Age of 3. They develop the key skills and confidence required for children to join an Beginner with Confidence class (BC).

​

Beginner with Confidence

BC Classes require participants to perform 6 of the following 7 key skills without goggles (these may be performed whilst wearing swim discs):

 

  1. Enter the water with a crouch dive (without goggles)

  2. Exit shallow water without the use of steps

  3. Float horizontally and motionless on your front in shallow water and in deep water

  4. Float horizontally and motionless on your back in shallow water and in deep water

  5. Swim 10m using Front Paddle with your arms pulling and legs kicking

  6. Swim 10m on your back

  7. Dip your face fully in to the water

 

Beginner with Confidence +

BC+ Classes require participants to perform 8 of the following 9 key skills without goggles and without the aid of swim discs (swim discs may be worn for key skill 7):

 

  1. Enter shallow water by lowering yourself in from the side or jumping in independently

  2. Exit shallow water without the use of steps

  3. Glide horizontally from the side with your face out of the water, then again with your face in the water, for a slow count of 3

  4. Glide horizontally from the side on your back with your arms at your side for a slow count of 3

  5. Swim 10m using Front Paddle with your arms pulling and legs kicking with 5m completed in deep water

  6. Swim 10m on your back with arms at your side without sculling with 5m completed in deep water

  7. Swim 5m using another pulling stroke (swim discs may be used as an aid when attempting this skill)

  8. Swim 5m dipping your face into the water intermittently

  9. Submerge your entire body into the water

 

Improving Swimmer

IS Classes require participants to perform 8 of the following 9 key skills. Goggles may be worn when attempting these skills with the exception of Skill 1:

 

  1. Enter shallow water by lowering yourself in from the side or jumping in independently

  2. Exit shallow water without the use of steps

  3. Glide horizontally from the side with your face out of the water, then again with your face in the water, for a slow count of 3

  4. Glide horizontally from the side on your back with your arms at your side for a slow count of 3

  5. Swim 20m using Front Paddle with your arms pulling and legs kicking from deep to shallow water

  6. Swim 20m on your back with arms at your side without sculling from deep to shallow water

  7. Swim 10m using a breastroke-type pull (swim discs may be used as an aid when attempting this skill)

  8. Swim 10m dipping your face into water intermittently and for at least half the distance

  9. Submerge your entire body into the water

 

Improving Swimmer +

IS+ Classes require participants to perform 8 of the following 9 key skills without goggles and without the aid of swim discs (swim discs may be worn for key skill 7):

 

  1. Enter the water with a crouch dive without goggles

  2. Glide horizontally from the side with your face in the water for a slow count of 3

  3. Glide horizontally from the side on your back with your arms at your side for a slow count of 3

  4. Swim 5m front crawl with your face in the water and arms recovering out and over the water

  5. Swim 2 x 10m back crawl pulling intermittently with the arms in a broken rhythm

  6. Swim 10m breastroke with your face out of the water using strokes where your arms are out in front of your shoulders whilst kicking with your legs simultaneously

  7. Tread water for 30 seconds

  8. Swim 2m underwater fully submerged

  9. Swim 50m without stopping using any of the strokes listed in key skills 4, 5 and 6

 

Stroke Improver

SI Classes require participants to perform the following 9 key skills:

​

  1. Enter the water with a standing dive from the poolside.

  2. Glide horizontally from the side on your front for 5 seconds with your face in the water.

  3. Glide horizontally from side on your back for 5 seconds with your arms in front of your head

  4. Swim 2 x 10m front crawl with your face in the water and your arms recovering out and over the water whilst breathing predominantly to the side. A short rest or pause is permissible between swims.

  5. Swim 3 x 10m back crawl without stopping using a continuous arm action.

  6. Swim 2 x 10m breaststroke with your face out of the water using clearly recognisable breaststroke arm and leg actions. The arm must be in front of shoulders and the feet turning outwards on each kick.

  7. Tread water for 2-minutes.

  8. Swim 5m underwater with your body fully submerged starting with a head first surface dive.

  9. Swim 200m without stopping

 

Advanced Swimmer

Please Note: There are 3 levels of Advanced Classes: Personal Survival; Life Saving; Competitive Swimming

AS Classes require participants to perform the following 10 key skills:

​

  1. Enter water by using a Spring Header from the poolside

  2. Use an aquatic (underwater) glide into front crawl

  3. Use an aquatic (underwater) glide into back crawl

  4. Swim 25m front crawl using bi-lateral breathing

  5. Swim 50m back crawl using an 's' style pull

  6. Swim 50m breaststroke using aquatic glide timing and a whip kick with your feet dorsi-flexed

  7. Swim 15 metres butterfly

  8. Tread water for 2-minutes with one hand in air and then for further `minute with both hands in air.

  9. Swim 5m fully submerged from a feet-first surface dive making a 90-degree change of direction at the half-way point

  10. Swim 600 metres without stopping

 

Adults

 

Complete Beginner

CB classes are designed for Adults of any age. They develop the key skills and confidence required to progress to a Novice Swimmer class (NAS).

​

Novice Adult Swimmer

NAS Classes require participants to perform 8 of the following 9 key skills without goggles and without the aid of swim discs (swim discs may be worn for key skill 7):

​

  1. Enter shallow water by lowering yourself in from the side or jumping in independently

  2. Exit shallow water without the use of steps

  3. Glide horizontally from the side with your face out of the water, then again with your face in the water, for a slow count of 3

  4. Glide horizontally from the side on your back with your arms at your side for a slow count of 3

  5. Swim 10m using Front Paddle with your arms pulling and legs kicking with 5m completed in deep water

  6. Swim 10m on your back with arms at your side without sculling with 5m completed in deep water

  7. Swim 5m using another pulling stroke (swim discs may be used as an aid when attempting this skill)

  8. Swim 5m dipping your face into the water intermittently

  9. Submerge your entire body into the water

 

Improving Adult Swimmer

IAS Classes require participants to perform 8 of the following 9 key skills without goggles and without the aid of swim discs (swim discs may be worn for key skill 7):

​

  1. Enter the water with a crouch dive without goggles

  2. Glide horizontally from the side with your face in the water for a slow count of 3

  3. Glide horizontally from the side on your back with your arms at your side for a slow count of 3

  4. Swim 5m front crawl with your face in the water and arms recovering out and over the water

  5. Swim 2 x 10m back crawl pulling intermittently with the arms in a broken rhythm

  3. Glide horizontally from side on your back for 5 seconds with your arms in front of your head
